Preview : The Goat Roper Rodeo Band & Michele StodartThe Blue Sky, Bangor I 7pm, Thursday, 12th October I £10
Choosing a 'gig of the month' for October proved difficult, as Y Niwl's album launch at Pontio has an enticing bill (Sat. 21.10.17), but in the end the combination of the live energy of The Goat Roper Rodeo Band and the musically enchanting Michele Stodart won out.
With her brother Romeo as a cohort, Stodart has enjoyed more than a decade of success as a member of The Magic Numbers. She has also released two acclaimed solo albums; starting with Wide-Eyed Crossing in 2012, and then Pieces last year. The latter's intimate, far edge of evening atmosphere drew well earned comparisons with Gillian Welch and Allison Moorer.
Rhyl's The Goat Ropers are a rising legend on the festival circuit - living off a perpetual motion of live dates across the UK and into Europe. The trio (all sing, with two guitars and a double bass as backing) have been described as being 'like the Everly Brothers fronted by Gram Parsons'; whatever the musical hinterland, on stage they deliver country blues and soul with frenetic glee. With two albums already released (the last, Cosmic Country Blue, was produced by Romeo Stodart), they are working on a third, and will likely be further roadtesting some of their already stage-honed new material at this gig.
When The Goat Ropers played the Blue Sky last year, we noted that they had the on stage 'life force and vitality of The Pogues in their prime', this year with Michele Stodart sharing the bill, the date is genuinely unmissable.
