Gary Roberts : Rest My Bones (single)

When German travel writer Peter Sager surveyed Llandudno he allegedly warned it was in danger of becoming the "Old Mother Riley of Costa Geriatrica" - not a tag line that has made it into the tourism brochures of a town with a fifth of all Wales' overnight accommodation.

In truth there is much more to the town than this slight, or a casual visit suggests - the bursts of creative activity around the Mostyn Gallery, Call, the Llawn festival and new 3rd Space venue space signify a place with a real and growing cultural vibrancy.

It's not just the visual arts, venues and events - scratch the surface and there is music too, and this includes Gary Roberts, singer/guitarist with Courteous Thief and singer songwriter in his own right - a mainstream folk pop talent edging towards the release of his debut album in summer 2017. Rest my Bones is a single released ahead of this record - and it shares the energy and animation of its Courteous Thief predecessor Once Burnt.

There is a genuine skill for songwriting showcased here - an immediate and memorable melody, and a well crafted song. Despite the slightly despondent nature of the lyric, reflecting elliptically on the dead ends of small town life (it wouldn't make the best soundtrack for a Visit Llandudno TV ad, although it'd undoubtedly get Peter Sager's toes tapping), and the rueful vocal, Rest my Bones is another great uplifting slice of elegant acoustic pop.

The album should be much anticipated.
